HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD YOU GIVE YOUR DOG OR CAT DURING THE SUMMER?

In July and August when the summer heat is glaring down on us, our furry babies could be struggling the most without us knowing.  During hot weather, dogs and cats need constant access to fresh, cool water. A good general guideline is:

Dogs

  • About 1 ounce (30 mL) of water per pound of body weight per day under normal conditions.
  • In the summer, after exercise, or on particularly hot days, they may need significantly more—sometimes up to twice their usual intake.

Examples:

  • 10 lb dog: about 10 oz (1¼ cups) daily, or more in hot weather.
  • 30 lb dog: about 30 oz (3¾ cups) daily, or more in hot weather.
  • 60 lb dog: about 60 oz (7½ cups) daily, or more in hot weather.

Cats

  • About 3.5–4.5 ounces (100–130 mL) of water per 5 pounds of body weight per day, including moisture from food.
  • Cats eating wet food typically drink less water because they get much of their hydration from their meals.
  • Cats eating mostly dry kibble usually need to drink more water.

Summer hydration tips

  • Refill water bowls with fresh, cool water several times a day.
  • Place multiple water bowls around the house and yard.
  • Bring water and a portable bowl on walks or outings.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Never leave pets in a parked car, even briefly.

Signs of dehydration include:

  • Dry or sticky gums
  • Sunken eyes
  • Lethargy
  • Excessive panting (dogs)
  • Loss of skin elasticity
  • Reduced appetite
